The Three Signs of a Miserable Job

After reading this book I wrote “The Power of the Positive Audit” for The Anderson Agency ReportThe “The Power of the Positive Audit” takes the premise of this book and applies it to insurance agencies specifically.  This book shows us that Patrick Lencioni, renowned business consultant and bestselling author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, is on a critical mission to create widespread job satisfaction in a world full of workplace misery.

This is another must read for every owner, partner, manager and supervisor of any type of firm.  My two part article on “The Power of the Positive Audit” are available here:

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team – Book Review

This was my first Patrick Lencioni book.  Reading it opened my eyes to what I believe are often core issues that my clients face in operating their businesses.  I was fortunate to be able to attend Patrick’s Building Winning Teams Workshop in November 2007.  It was an awesome workshop.  I recommend this book to every agency I work with and I highly recommend Patrick’s workshop.

HIGH-TECC 2009 Reflections

As usual I leave HIGH-TECC with my head chocked full of new information and ideas.   I have yet to check out any of the new ideas, but it could happen very soon.  Maybe later today.

In addition to lots of new ideas, HIGH-TECC is a great time to see old friends, make new friends and strengthen relationships.  I was fortunate to have the week before HIGH-TECC to wrap up some loose ends so that while in Vail I could focus on the people and happenings there.  This is the one conference where there seems to be the time and opportunities for real networking.  I left refreshed, mind cleaned out from the fresh air and ready to be back at it this week.

As usual, Steve provided us with a great program and Jenny kept us all on track.  I am already looking forward to next year.  I would like to ask that you provide comments on HIGH-TECC Day 2 about the various break-out sessions or any other comments you would like to add to the various posts.

HIGH-TECC 2009 – Day 3 – July 22

room photo On the 3rd morning we are all on information overload, but looking for more.  There seems to be no photo from the 3rd morning, but this is a photo from the 1st day when we still look fresh.  As you can see we are hooked into our technology.

As we struggle with waking up our minds Steve forges ahead with his What’s Great In 2009.   He is demonstrating voice recognition software Dragon  Naturally Speaking Version 10 Preferred.  We are moving on to the the many uses of video.  He is discussing a number of uses of video at websites, the use of video for training and how and why to use a Flip Video.  Steve is showing us how to use eyejot to send video emails to clients.

HIGH-TECC 2009 – Day 2 – July 21

Dan Presenting Dan Epstein of ReSource Pro began the day discussing Driving Efficiency & Enterprise Value with Business Process Outsourcing. Dan provided a brief presentation on what Business Process Outsourcing is and how it enhances an agencies ability to build their client relationships. He then opened up the session to questions, answers and discussions. This was one of the best open forums and exchange of information I have been involved in for some time.

HIGH-TECC 2009 – Day 1 – July 20

image Good morning from the 1st day of HIGH-TECC 2009 in Vail, CO.  After opening comments from Steve Anderson we are engaged by Mitch Axelrod, Axelrod & Associates.  His topic, Win the New Game of Business.  Wow what a great opening session.  Some comments to share:

  • Don’t think outside the box, “Throw Away the Box”.
  • Imperfect action beats perfect inaction every time.
  • Ask people why they bought from you.
  • Ask people why they didn’t buy from you.
  • Strengthen your strengths, don’t strengthen your weaknesses.
  • Serve, deliver and serve some more.
  • Thoughts are a dime-a-dozen, Knowledge is scarce and valuable, Wisdom is priceless.
  • Are your systems a barrier to serving your clients or do they provide the tools to serve your clients.

Edison & Ford Winter Estates

IMG_2439

Gene and I planned to visit here a few years ago and spend the weekend on Sanibel Island.  Well there was the small matter of a hurricane named Charley.  When we found out where the I-CAN meeting was going to be this year, we included an extra day in our plan so that we could hopefully accomplish this visit.  I am so glad we did.

A visit to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates is truly special.    These two men are icons of American business.  Some interesting facts:

  • Ford worked for Edison before he began manufacturing automobiles.
  • Edison searched the world for plants to bring to the estates.
  • Edison, Ford and Harvey Firestone sought out plants that contained latex for the manufacture of rubber.
  • The Banyan Tree shown in the picture above, is now over an acre in diameter, and it is understood to be the second largest in the world.

If you have the chance you should take a 1/2 day and visit.  You might want to choose a bit cooler weather, but come early in the day.  The crowds get heavier as the day goes on, even in the hot weather.  This is one those destinations I seek out in traveling “The Glamour of the Road”.  Enjoy our pictures.

How a Wonderful Gentleman Brightened my day

In good spirits MCCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash.— Gen. Duncan McNabb, Air Mobility Command commander, congratulates Medal of Honor recipient, retired Col. Joe Jackson, during the naming of a McChord C-17 Globemaster III as the Spirit of Col. Joe M. Jackson recently. U.S. Air Force/Photo by Abner GuzmanThis morning I really didn’t feel like getting on an airplane and traveling for 4 hours.  Also, I had not received an upgrade to 1st class by the time I arrived at the airport.  I just wasn’t a very happy camper.

I did receive the 1st class upgrade just before boarding.  My day brightened immediately.  What I didn’t know how much more my day would be mean by receiving this upgrade.  I went and stood by the poll close to the Priority Boarding area.  The ticket agent pre-boarded a lady in a wheel chair and a spry, elderly gentlemen with a white tipped cane for the visually impaired.

Annapolis, MD

Each year I am required to do 20 hours of classroom time to maintain my CIC designation.  For my non-insurance friends this is an insurance designation titled Certificated Insurance CounselorOnce you have the designation, there are number of different types of curriculum available in different places around the US.   My first challenge is year is what I want to take and then where I want to go.

Several years ago we had the opportunity to visit Annapolis on a cold Sunday afternoon for lunch and a few shops.  I saw a class I was interested in and low and behold it was in Annapolis on a week I had available.  So it was meant to be.

My words for Annapolis are charming, historical and beautiful.  There are row houses, with almost each one a designated historical building.  Numerous great old buildings with wonderful architecture.  The Maryland State House is located here.  It is the oldest State House in the nation in continuous use.  It was also undergoing some renovation, but as you can see from the photos it is a grand old building.

Let’s talk about the food.  All of this area is famous for the blue crabs.  Oh my goodness.  I remembered these from my first visit and other visits to the Baltimore area and couldn’t wait.  Well there were blue crabs as lunch the day we went to the Navel Academy and several other occasions that week for crab cakes.  I am so glad we had the opportunity to spend some time in this wonderful area of our country.  Another good event in our travels on The Glamour of the Road.
